First Project (Online forum Discussion)

In the history for the first part we had an online forum discussion and each of us in a group had to research about a special question about a special building and post it on Taylor's t online times. So my part was about the materials and methods of the "Cathedral of Pisa"

What materials / methods are used for construction?

Materials used for the cathedral church: bearing masonry with cut stone constructions, white marble used on the exterior of the building and lots of colored marble for the interior of the building , they also used wood for the doors and some furnitures inside , also as any other churches , they used stained glass.

White MarbleMarble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. masons use Marble more broadly to encompass unmetamorphosed limestone. Marble is commonly used for sculpture and as a building material. Italy is the world leader in marble production, with 20% share in global marble production.

WoodWood has been an important construction material since humans began building shelters, houses and boats. In buildings made of other materials, wood will still be found as a supporting material, especially in roof construction, in interior doors and their frames, and as exterior cladding.

Stained GlassThe term stained glass can refer to coloured glass as a material or to works created from it. Throughout its thousand-year history, the term has been applied almost exclusively to the windows of churches and other significant buildings.

 Methods of construction

Method of construction: the type of building is a complex church,  the style of building is Romanesque, it also includes the famous leaning tower. in this complex church they used "Dome" and lots of archs , which had been inspired from the Romans .

Hierarchy Technique: Hierarchical proportion is a technique used in art, mostly in sculpture and paiting, in which the artist uses unnatural proportion or scale to depict the relative importance of the figures in the artwork.

Romanesque Architecture: Romanesque architecture is an architectural style of medieval Europe characterized by semi-circular arches. There is no consensus for the beginning date of the Romanesque architecture, with proposals ranging from the 6th to the 10th century. It developed in the 12th century into the Gothic style , in addition the Pisa Cathedral has began in 1063 , hence on that time this styles were common.

Pisa cathedral church is one of the most impressive cathedrals of the world , it includes the famous leaning tower beside , which makes this cathedral much more famous than others.

DomeA dome is an element of architecture that resembles the hollow upper half of a sphere. Dome structures made of various materials have a long architectural lineage extending into prehistory.Dome has been inspired by the mosque architecture ,Dome is easier to build because it gets the pressure down to the sides and makes more stable structure.

the roman archs which used in the front of the cathedral and even inside , makes the buuilding special , and it look likes a drawing , the archs are really built accounted , archs makes the building more stable and even gives a good look too the building .

Second Project(Hand drawing Board)

The next  project od history was about to choose a question again and this time we had to make board which is all full of hand drawings and hand writings , my part in this project was about the materials and the lighting inside of the cathedral.

Bearing Masonry : Masonry is the building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by workers , Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction.

Advantages

  • The use of material such as bricks and stones can increase the thermal mass of a building and can protect the building from fire.

  • Most types of masonry typically will not require painting and so can provide a structure with reduced life-cycle costs.

  • Masonry walls are more resistant to projectiles, such as debris from hurricanes or tornadoes.

Third Project (Model making)

As a last assignment for culture and history we were required to make a model of our building in a wood type, they gave us the choice of making either half plan half section or the whole building, even though making it help plan half section was easier and we could skip for making the hardest part of the model (The Dome) but we decided to make the whole building, and we made the balsa wood type of Pisa Cathedral
