Project 1: DECONSTRUCTING Part One – Case Study and Thematic Research

Introduction

The aim of this project (project 1) is to research and establish an understanding of a theme that will
be used as tool to modify the narrative and spatial re-modelling of a selected building.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Gain further knowledge of a subject of interest outside of architecture
2. Gain an alternative interpretation and understanding of these elements that are associated to
architecture: light and shadow, form, memory + materiality, movement, function and scale.

Project 2: DECONSTRUCTING Part Two – Case Study and Analytical Diagrams

Introduction

Building Analysis
Your case study building should be selected from the Modernist era onwards, and can be either from
the Western or Asian context. It should be a building that is well diagrammed and that you wish to
understand fully
It should be a project that has already been completed, rather than a conceptual proposal that is in
development.
The ‘Building’ of choice and theme should not be too similar as this may limit the impact of your
“reconstruction” or observing through thematic analysis carried through for project 3
The building analysis (project 2) should take the form of a Case Study, and you should source the
necessary drawings and information in order to do this. The underlying philosophy and design
precepts of the architect are also to be included

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Discern and produce visually effective and “SUMMARIZED”communicative diagrams
2. Employ the use of diagrams to explore and investigate key ideas and thematic issues related to
building design
3. Develop a critical understanding of the constructs, themes and ideas for “transforming” the building

Project 3: RECONSTRUCTING – Modeling the Interpretation

Introduction

Based on the respective analysis carried out on the selected themes in Project 1 and building
case studies in Project 2, you are to produce a conceptual architectural model which conveys an
interpretation of the building in a creative and communicative manner.
This model should not be an exact scaled replica of the building, rather it should be an
interpretation of the building communicating key ideas derived from the thematic analysis.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Analyse and re-interpret architectural design in relation to different themes/philosophies
2. Develop and abstract conceptual ideas for architectural design proposals
3. Discern effective types and techniques of diagramming to explore and communicate thematic
ideas
